Random Thoughts - Sun Opensources Java

Did anyone hear that at all ? Not anyone around me even talked about it - Looks like no one cares about it anyway.

But then, open sourcing of Java is good for the community - and I would like to believe that it will have the same effect that Netscape had when they open sourced their browser. Netscape had to be rewritten with a new Gecko Engine - and I hope Sun Java is too. Sun has been good to the open source community - OpenOffice, OpenSolaris and now OpenJava

For once I have no hesitation to say Go get JAVA!

Promoting OSS: Show, don't tell

Brad Jackel writes at NewsForge that you have to show what's relavent to the user rather than show off what you can do if you are promoting Open Source Software.

"It is well worth the time to take the trouble to learn what a given audience does with its computers (and how) and then focus any presentation or advocacy on improving that work. Users will enthusiastically embrace a better tool when they are not just told what it can do, but shown how they will be able to use it."
